The football club Meppen was founded in 1923 and played their first ever competitive game in 1924. In their 119-year history the club have played in a total of ten different divisions, winning the German Amateur Football Championship in 1977 and the Northern German Regional Football Championship in 2009. The club plays their home games at the Stadion am Kölnerberg.
