Oldham Athletic Football Club is a professional football club based in the town of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. The club, formed in 1878, competes in League One, the third tier of the English football league system. Oldham Athletic played in the Football League for the first time in 1931, and returned in 1937. After finishing as champions of League Two in 1978–79, the club achieved promotion to the Football League First Division. The club then reached the FA Cup final in 1980, losing 2–1 to Liverpool. The club’s best performance in the FA Cup came in 2003, when they reached the fourth round before losing to Arsenal. After finishing as League Two champions in 2006–07, the club achieved promotion to the Football League Championship. The club played in League One for the first time in their history in 2013–14. Oldham Athletic was relegated from League One in 2016–17, and were promoted to League Two the following season.
