Match-fixing typically occurs when one or more players, the match referee, or another involved party agree to alter the outcome of a match for personal gain. This can involve one team agreeing to lose, players taking bribes to intentionally play poorly or make mistakes, referees making decisions that favor one team, or any other manipulation of the game. Match-fixing is illegal in most countries.
