Aalen is a German football club based in Aalen, Baden-Württemberg. The club is currently playing in the 3. Liga, the third division of German football.
The club was founded in 1921 as a football and athletics club. The football section of the club was founded in 1965, and the club has been playing in the regional divisions of German football ever since. The club’s biggest success came in the 2010–11 season when they won the 3. Liga and achieved promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. They were however relegated after one season and have been playing in the 3. Liga since.
The club’s home ground is the Aalen-Scholz Arena, which was opened in 1921 and has a capacity of 8,500 spectators. It is named after the former chairman of the club Erwin Scholz. The club’s colours are red and white and their mascot is an eagle called “Aalino”.
The club has a strong rivalry with the nearby club FC Heidenheim. The two clubs have played each other regularly since the late 1970s and the rivalry became more intense when both clubs achieved promotion to the 3. Liga in 2011.
The club’s supporters are known as the “Eagle Fans” and they are known for their passionate support and for creating a fantastic atmosphere in the stadium. The club has won numerous awards.
