Estoril club was founded on the 25th of May, 1917, in the city of Lisbon. The club was originally known as Sporting Club de Estoril, until 1969 when the name was changed to Estoril F.C. During the 1990s, Estoril dramatically improved their results and reached the Portuguese Cup Semi-finals in 1997, 1998 and 1999. In 2003, the club was relegated to the Second Division, but regained promotion in 2005 and reached the Primeira Liga, the top flight of football in Portugal. In the 2006/2007 season, Estoril finished 8th in the Primeira Liga, but were immediately relegated back to the Segunda Liga. In the 2007/2008 season, Estoril finished 2nd in the Segunda Liga, but were again relegated. The club achieved promotion back to the Primeira Liga in the 2009/2010 season, after finishing as champions of the Segunda Liga.
