The team finished the 2004–05 season in second place and was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord. The club finished the 2006–07 season in first place in the Regionalliga Nord and was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. The club played in the 2. Bundesliga until the 2009–10 season when it was relegated to the 3. Liga. The club finished the 2010–11 season in second place in the 3. Liga and was promoted to the Bundesliga. The club played in the Bundesliga until the 2017–18 season when it was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. The club played in the 2. Bundesliga until the 2020–21 season when it was relegated to the 3. Liga.
