Istanbul’s failed bid to host the 2020 European Championships was met with disappointment, but the city’s football supporters will be cheering on their club Istanbulspor, who are set to make their debut in the Turkish Super Lig season. Istanbulspor is officially owned by the municipality and was founded in 1924, making it the oldest continually operating football club in Europe. The club has a long and illustrious history, playing in the European Cup and UEFA Champions League, as well as several domestic cup competitions. Istanbul’s biggest club, Galatasaray, also compete in the Super Lig, making the derby games between the two clubs some of the most anticipated in Turkish football. With a strong squad and exciting new arrivals, Istanbulspor are out to make an impact in their maiden season in the Super Lig.
