Magdeburg is a football club based in the city of Magdeburg, Germany. The club was formed in 1911 and played in the lower divisions of the German football league system until 1945, when it was disbanded due to the Second World War. After the war, Magdeburg reformed and played in the Amateur Oberliga Nord until 1965, when it was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time. The club struggled in the Bundesliga, however, and was relegated again in 1970. Magdeburg returned to the Bundesliga in 1974 and has been in the top flight since. The club reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2001 and the German Cup in 2006.
Magdeburg play in the colours black and yellow and have a strong following throughout Eastern Germany. The club’s home ground is the Ernst-Walter-Stadion, which has a capacity of 43,000. The team’s traditional rivals are German sides Dresden and Leipzig.
