Football club Panathinaikos was founded on 8 October 1898, at the initiative of Dr. Spyridon Louis. The team’s emblem is the serpent, which is thought to represent wisdom and the power of the gods. The colours are blue and white, and the team’s home ground has always been the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The club has won 24 Greek Championships (the most titles of any football club), and also won the European Cup twice. In 2007, Panathinaikos qualified for the Champions League for the first time, and reached the semi-finals.
