Reading Football Club, often abbreviated to simply Reading, is an English football club based in Reading. The club was formed in 1871 and played its early years at Reading Abbey before moving to its current home of the Madejski Stadium in 1906. They currently play in the Championship, the second tier of English football.
Reading were formed in 1871, making them one of the oldest football clubs in the world. The first ever game the club played was a 1–1 draw against Harrow County. Reading went on to play in the Southern League and then the Football League. They were relegated in their first ever season in the Football League, but they managed to stay up the following season by finishing in 10th place. The club then went on to win the FA Amateur Cup in 1896 and returned to the Football League.
Reading reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1907 and 1913, but they were unable to victory. The club then made their greatest achievement by winning the Second Division championship in 1936 and then the Football League Championship in 1937. Reading then reached the FA Cup final for the first time in their history, but they were defeated 2–1 by Liverpool. After winning the Second Division championship in 1957, Reading returned to the FA Cup final for the second time and this time they won 3–2 against Manchester United.
Reading finished in seventh place in the Premier League in 2010–11, but they reached the FA Cup final for the third time in their history and this time they managed to win 3–2 against Chelsea. Reading then finished in eighth place in the Premier League in 2011–12 and they were relegated to the Championship. The club then reached the League Cup final for the fourth time in their history and they reached the final by defeating Manchester City 3–1. Reading then finished in third place in the Championship in 2012–13 and they were promoted back to the Premier League. The club then finished in fourth place in the Premier League in 2013–14 and they were therefore relegated back to the Championship.
Reading reached the League Cup final for the fifth time in their history and they reached the final by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3–1. Reading then won the Championship title in 2014–15 and they were promoted back to the Premier League. Reading then reached the League Cup final for the sixth time in their history and they reached the final by defeating Manchester City 2–1. Reading then finished in second place in the Premier League in 2015–16 and they were promoted back to the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. Reading then reached the League Cup final for the seventh time in their history and they reached the final by defeating Southampton 3–2. Reading then finished in third place in the Premier League in 2016–17 and they were therefore promoted to the Champions League for the second time in the club’s history. Reading then reached the League Cup final for the eighth time in their history
