When most people think of football clubs from the small Irish town of Sligo Rovers A.F.C. come to mind. The club has a long and proud history which can be traced back to 1884. Sligo Rovers have had a turbulent past with various financial issues and various changes of ownership. However, the club has consistently managed to field a competitive side which has resulted in them playing in the top flight of Irish football for most of their existence. The club is currently playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division. Their home ground is The Showgrounds in Sligo which has a capacity of 5,500 people. Sligo Rovers have won a number of major trophies including the FAI Cup in 1931 and the League of Ireland Cup in 1976.
