St Etienne ( French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ tiˈniɲ]) is a French professional football club based in the city of Saint-Étienne in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The club was formed in 1902 and played its first official match in November 1902. The club has played in Ligue 1, the top level of French football, since the 1993–94 season. St Etienne plays its home matches at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
St Etienne currently occupies the sixth position in Ligue 1, having finished in the top half of the table for each of the last six seasons. The club’s biggest achievement in recent times came in the 2011–12 season, when they reached the quarter-finals of the French Cup and finished in fourth place in Ligue 1. The club also reached the final of the Coupe de France in 2003 and won the Coupe de la Ligue in 1976. In Europe, St Etienne reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1984 and 2002.
