Sunderland AFC is a football club based in the city of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. The club was founded in 1879 and played its first competitive match in 1883. Sunderland played its first match in the Football League in 1912. The club has never won the English Premier League, but has been champions of the Football League twice, in 1937 and 2018. Sunderland has been runners-up in the FA Cup twice, in 1934 and 1975. The club’s greatest success came in the 1960s and 70s, when it reached the final of the European Cup twice, winning in 1963 and 1967. Sunderland played its last match in the top flight of English football in 1985–86. The club was relegated from the top flight in 2003 and it has been in the second tier of English football ever since. The club’s anthem is “The Black Cats”, which was written by Bob Stokoe.
