Venezia is an Italian football club based in Venice. Founded in 1905, it has played since 1919 in Serie A, the highest level of Italian football. In recent years, the club has also competed in the Europa League. The team’s colours are blue and white.
Football was first played in Venice in the 1840s. A group of students from the University of Padua formed a team called Unione Venezia in 1877, but it was not until 1905 that a football club was formally founded, called United Venetian. The first match played by United Venetian was against another Paduan team, Vicenza. United Venetian played its first official game against the local side Pro Patria on 22 September 1905. The first captain of United Venetian was Luigi Bertolini. The first time United Venetian played in a league competition was in the 1905–06 season. The club participated in the second level of Italian football, the division two. United Venetian finished the season in second place, behind Pro Patria.
In the seasons following, United Venetian finished in fourth, third and second place in division two. The club won their first championship title in the 1911–12 season. The championship was decided in a play-off against Torino. United Venetian advanced to the semifinals after winning the first leg 2–0. In the semifinals, United Venetian played A.C. Milan. United Venetian lost the match by a score of 3–1.
In the 1925–26 season, United Venetian finished in first place in division two. The club won its second championship title in the 1927–28 season. The championship was decided in a play-off against Modena. United Venetian advanced to the semifinals after winning the first leg 2–0. In the semifinals, United Venetian played Juventus. United Venetian lost the match by a score of 2–1.
United Venetian played its first game in Serie A in the 1929–30 season. The club finished in ninth place in the Serie A championship. In the 1931–32 season, United Venetian finished in eighth place in the Serie A championship. The club qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round to Lazio.
In the 1950s, United Venetian competed in the Serie B. The club had a successful season in the Serie B championship in the 1950–51 season. United Venetian won the championship title. The championship was decided in a play-off against Lecce. United Venetian won the first leg 1–0 and the second leg 2–1.
In the 1959–60 season, United Venetian finished in fifth place in the Serie A championship. The club qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round to Roma.
