Charlton Athletic Football Club is a professional football club based in Charlton, south-east London, England. The club participates in the Premier League, the second tier of English football. The club plays its home games at The Valley. The club was formed in 1905 as Charltonville Athletic and changed its name to Charlton Athletic in 1907. The team finished as runners-up in 1912 and 1914, and won the Football League South Division in 1919. Charlton Athletic were relegated to the Football League Third Division in 1932, but were promoted back to the Football League Second Division in 1935. The club finished as Division Two champions in 1938 and won promotion to the Football League First Division in 1939. The club played in the top division for the first time in its history in 1948. Charlton Athletic were relegated to the Football League Third Division in 1958. After finishing in the bottom division in 1963, the club was relegated to the Football League Fourth Division in 1984. Charlton Athletic were promoted to the Football League Third Division in 1992, and were promoted to the Football League Second Division in 1997. The club won the Football League Second Division title in 2003 and the Football League Cup in 2005. The club was relegated to the Football League Championship in 2006 and relegated to the Football League Third Division in 2011.
