Newcastle United Football Club is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The club was formed in 1892 as Newcastle East End and played its first competitive match in September 1892 against South Shields. Newcastle East End merged with Newcastle West End in 1917 and changed its name to Newcastle United. The club has won five League Championship titles (1908, 1909, 1910, 1921, 1973) and four FA Cups (1903, 2004, 2005, 2010). Newcastle United was promoted to the Premier League in 2004 and finished in 6th place in the 2007–08 season. Newcastle United played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2009–10 and finished in the group stages. In the 2010–11 season, Newcastle United finished second in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
