Newport County is a football club based in South Wales, England. The club was formed from the merger of Newport County A.F.C. and Newport County Nomads in 1920. They currently play in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. Newport played in the Football League throughout the club’s early years, departing in 1964 only to return in 1983. They achieved promotion to the third tier in 1988 and subsequently reached the second tier, the Championship, in 1995. In 2014, Newport County were relegated to League Two, the fourth tier of English football, after suffering financial difficulties.
