Union Berlin is a professional German football club based in Berlin, that currently plays in the 2. Bundesliga. The club was formed in 1890 and played its first competitive match in 1896. The team was part of the East German football league system from 1949 to 1990 and won the DDR-Oberliga in 1966 and the German Bundesliga in 1990. After the reunification of Germany, Union Berlin re-joined the Bundesliga in 2001. The team reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in 2009 and the DFB-Pokal final in 2013.
