Villarreal

Villarreal C.F.S. is a Spanish football club based in Villarreal, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. Formed on 3 November 1912, as “Club Villarreal”, the club played its early years in regional leagues before achieving national prominence in the 1940s. The club reached the 1959 European Cup Final, where they lost to Real Madrid. Villarreal returned to the final in 1985, where they lost to Atlético Madrid. They reached the 2007 UEFA Cup Final, which they lost to Liverpool. The club play their home matches at the La Romareda Stadium.

Villarreal C.F.S. was founded on 3 November 1912 as Club Villarreal, with the main purpose of representing the city of Villarreal in regional leagues. However, they soon achieved national prominence and were promoting steadily through the Spanish football system by the 1940s.

In 1959, Villarreal reached the European Cup Final, their first major European final, but lost to Real Madrid. Villarreal reached the final again in 1985, only to lose to Atlético Madrid. They reached the 2007 UEFA Cup Final, where they lost to Liverpool.

Villarreal have had a long-standing rivalry with Valencia CF, with the matches known as the “Clasico de los Rojiblancos”. This rivalry reached its peak during the 1980s, when both teams were fighting for Spanish domination. In 2013, Valencia CF were promoted to La Liga, ending the Villarreal’s 41-year spell in the top-flight of Spanish football. This rivalry was revived during the 2017–18 season, with both teams competing for the 2017 UEFA Cup spot.

Villarreal play their home matches at La Romareda Stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 50,000 and was built in 1985. It is also the home of Villarreal’s youth teams.

The club’s main colours are yellow and blue. Their badge features a yellow double-headed eagle. Villarreal’s anthem is “El Baile del Pueblo”, written by José María Atienza and arranged by Manuel Rodríguez.
